Of all the genetic disorders, the most common and probably the most inheritable disorder is autism. Due to its high rates, intensive research is being carried out to discover the main reason for this problem, although the success stories are far from many. There has been no major breakthrough in determining the exact genes which cause this problem and hence no remedial measures can be initiated.

In the case of twins, if the first is a victim of autism, the chances for the second having the same is more than 50%. This high percentage is the direct result of them both having similar DNA. It reduces to 4.5% for fraternal siblings as their DNA are comparatively less similar. It can be seen from the above figures that the chances of heredity transfer of this problem is more as for a normal human, the percentage is as small as .5%. Twins stand the highest chance of confirming to autism of the same type.

Some researchers have tried to prove that autism is not only related to the genetic factor but also to the child birth process. Adoption of incorrect procedure or problems during child birth can lead to an autistic child. This comes in difference to all the other researches which show the problem to only be related to genetics.

Talking of cases not related to twins, families have been studied with findings stating that the percentage for siblings to have the same type of autism is approximately 1% which increases to 1.5% for different forms of the disease. Mothers having been diagnosed with psychiatric disorder ran a higher risk of encountering it. Age of the paternal parent was an issue in some cases. The research kept notice of all pieces of information, big or small like the location of birth, family history, and of course the age of the parents.

Even after such researches, there are many questions which have not been answered due to which, stating a big step has been achieved would be wrong. The high percentage of difference between the twins of identical and fraternal (50% and 4.5%) forms the major issue. There are huge dissimilarities between different cases which has prohibited generalizing the cause of autism. Also seen is the fact that in many cases, the parents of these autistic children are absolutely normal which is against the concept of heredity. There is definitely a need for more studies in this regard for better understanding. Statistics and figures are the only things which can help make a proper analysis.

No definite treatment is available for autism, but with some measures, it can be controlled. As the person grows, controlling also becomes a problem which is why; immediate measures should be taken from the time of discovery. There are both natural and medical treatments available with some alternate treatments offered by the regional medicinal practices like homeopathy. Patients need some support in the beginning but with the passage of time, they can start to become independent and live life happily.
