Genetics is the reason for people acquiring different traits and characteristics. All researches in the medical arena in the past have been towards curing diseases to help people in need. Due to the increase in competition and want of being perfect, people have started using genetics to make things not under their control happen. Everyone has heard about cloning, which is nothing but using genetic research technology to produce replicas.

Further researches have made it possible to undergo in vitro fertilization. This is where the doctors have the ability to induce the desired traits into the unborn child. Some of the many traits include enhancing the immune system, increasing the sporting ability of the child and also decide on the kind of built. This concept has been termed as "designer babies" with the parents able to "make babies according to their desires". The IQ levels, resentment to diseases, color of skin, and precaution from genetically transferable diseases can all be taken care of. For the most part, the effects are positive but they can also be used for negative purposes by misuse.

PGD or preimplantation genetic diagnosis is the method adopted to take care of all disorders related to birth, be it natural or genetic. In this test, the embryo cells are checked for abnormalities. Once the tests are complete, based on the result, it is decided what has to be done with them. If they are abnormal, they are destroyed, otherwise, planted in the womb. There are two ways in which this test is helpful, both allow for only a healthy child to be born with no complications.

a) The genes of the embryo are compared to the parents for heredity disorders. It is very beneficial for parents with problems which they want to preserve their children from.

b) The genes are tested for traits in which they might be susceptible to diseases in the future. In such a case, only those cells which are perfectly healthy are implanted.

However, this genetic marvel has witnessed high amounts of criticism. There has been a huge outcry among the religious sector that claims that this is against the law of nature and should be banned under all circumstances. To add to the problem, this technology not only allows for rectifying the medical problems but also allows for filtering of common physical traits like hair color, gender, body structure etc. Ethical boundaries have been crossed according to many with even the Pope commenting against it.

As far as the laws for carrying out such activities go, there are not many due to its low prominence. Since this technology is still in its starting phase, many countries fail to recognize it. Rules and regulations would have to be made and proper regulations put in place before it can be allowed for public use. A huge demand for this is expected which could result in mass discrimination and a potential violence could erupt. Getting the desired traits for new babies would have to be banned whereas allowing for rectification of diseases being permitted.
